Chicken Care Tips
How to start backyard chickens / beginner chicken keeping
Starting a backyard chicken flock is one of the most rewarding steps into homesteading but it can feel overwhelming at first.
The good news? It doesn’t have to be complicated.
Before you bring your first chickens home, focus on three things: shelter, feed, and space. Your coop doesn’t need to be fancy it just needs to be safe, dry, and predator-proof. Chickens also need constant access to clean water and a balanced layer feed once they’re mature.
Start small. A flock of 3–6 hens is perfect for beginners. It’s easier to manage, less overwhelming, and still gives you fresh eggs every few days.
Most importantly, take your time and learn your flock. Chickens have personalities, routines, and quirks. You’ll pick them up quickly.
At The Coop Commander, we believe every great flock starts simple.
